Snow and ice equipment buying guide for contractors and property managers
How to choose snow shovels, pushers, snow blowers, salt spreaders and sweepers for commercial properties, plus when to order so equipment arrives before winter.
From the people behind Thames Valley Snow & Exteriors: what actually matters when you equip crews or buildings for winter.
Shovels and pushers
- Pushers (wide blades) clear sidewalks and lots fastest in light to moderate snow.
- Scoop shovels move heavier, wetter snow and windrows.
- Look for poly blades with a steel or wear strip, and strong shaft connections: that joint fails first.
Snow blowers
Two-stage machines handle deep and wet snow and end-of-driveway windrows; single-stage machines suit light snow on paved surfaces. Check clearing width, intake height, drive system and engine emissions documentation for Canada.
Ice control
Walk-behind and tow-behind spreaders spread salt evenly and use less of it than hand-casting. Choose corrosion-resistant hoppers and frames.
Sweepers and attachments
Power brooms and skid-steer or tractor attachments (blades, pushers, buckets) speed up lot clearing. Match mounting systems to your machines.
Spares and timing
Order spare blades, wear strips, shear pins and belts with the equipment. Imported equipment needs lead time: place winter orders in late summer or early autumn so stock lands before the first snowfall.
